Magewind
the adventure of a life time!

“Go sailing now my friend,

it is later than you think”

This project has been waiting since the day Debora bought the boat that we now know and love as Magewind.   As it turned out, we didn’t know it at the time.  I just noticed at the time the rigging was a little sloppy.  When I asked the surveyor the we had flown in from Miami, he said “just take it to a rigging shop and they will tighten it up”. He nor I, bother to look at the base of the mast. So far, on every new boat that I purchased and had surveyor look at, they never really found the real problems, so much for hiring an expert.  All this time I have been afraid of really sailing the boat for fear of pushing the mast through the deck.

The original idea was just to go ahead and route out a spot immediately underneath the mast and put in a piece of G10. The problem was, that the deeper we went the more problems were found. We ended up taking everything down to the final fiberglass membrane and started to rebuild from there. The project has taken some time because of the area, only two layers of fiberglass could be late per day for fear that the epoxy would heat up too hot and cause bubbles between the layers. After everything was completely taken down, two layers were put in and then the following day two more were laid on top of those and connected to the sides. Sanding takes place between each set of layers. To level out the impression (‘The Dent’) in the deck, 12 smaller layers were laid before the G10 was put on. Then foam was layered on the sides to fill out the rest of the cut out and then multiple layers will be put on top of everything to finish out a flat deck.  The first will be 6 layers and ice will be used to slow the curing.

Several more layers were added to fair down the sides.  You can see the thickness of the glass where the hatches will go back in.
